Ahn'Qiraj Gates Was Just a Long Filibuster

In a Slashdot thread regarding the "lameness" of World of Warcraft, user Archimonde writes a pretty damn good piece on why the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj event almost a year ago was a complete travesty. While most for certain it was world changing and epic, it pretty much failed on all other aspects.

Well everyone kinda already knew this, but it is nice to stick it out there for the record. =)

Hm. I thought it was fun. When I bothered to hand over the mats for the opening, I was given presents (greens and blues) and when I felt like selling mats in the AH, wealthy raiders paid me good money for them.

The gates opened and I was there, the monsters stomped around, hilarity ensued. I enjoyed every minute. My guild is now farming BWL and about to start AQ40 and I have not one shred of resentment that I am this late getting into AQ40.

Same with the Naxx event. I had a blast with my mage grinding AD rep, and gleefully exorcised faces with my holy paladin. Azeroth is boring when you've been 60 for a while. These events make the game a little more interesting while we wait for the BC, even if just for a short time.

And as for the asshat-with-the-key drama, I truly love this aspect of the game. I just LOVE it when players do things that devs didn't foresee. WoW is the world in a microcosm populated by beggars and thieves, by politicians and a caste society that mirrors "real life" with great accuracy. Remember the Blood Plague? Notice AH "gouging" and "hacks"? The "raider" vs. "casual" so-called debates? I just make pop corn and have fun watching.

I don't understand all the whining, I truly don't.

Meh, as the person below on slashdot says, I think it was more about cleaning up inflated economies than anything else. And in that respect it worked, of course.

Also, the day the gates opened was a lot of fun on my server, pretty much one of my foundest WoW memories. Maybe I'm just weird though.

Oh I don't know about a complete failure. It was a great way to get increased amounts of reputation with a faction of your choice. I bought out tons of runecloth for bandage turn-ins and ended up hitting exalted with Darnassus before rank 10 (didn't think I'd get the rep 'til quite a while after hitting Commander).

I found the AQ event to be a waste of time. On my server the guild that got the key plotted to open the gates when everyone least expected it and when the least amount of people would be on. It caused a lot of issues on my server between horde and alliance and ended up with a large portion of alliance players being camped. Eventually it did come down to them opening the gates when most people were still sleeping and so they didn't get the best of a reputation for doing it.

My server went down 6 times the during the AQ gate event. It went down twice during the event in moonglade as well, and once during the event in duskwood.

In that regard, the event was quite annoying, however I did get to friendly with brood of noz during the course of the event.
